Built for our 96mm Diameter Hogback Traction Wheel, this Flywheel is a sleek and space-efficient way to bump up the rotational inertia of your wheel system!
Rotational inertia is key to a wheel-based launcher system, and having control over the amount of rotational inertia in your system puts the controls for optimizing your system squarely in your hands. When a high-speed wheel contacts an object you'd like to throw, the wheel (when it has enough grip!) transfers energy into the object to accelerate it. As such, with more rotational inertia in your flywheel, the flywheel is more able to transfer that required energy into the ball without slowing. Keep in mind that this increase in inertia will require more time for the same motor to accelerate the flywheel up to speed.
For some launchers (like the one in our Starter Bot for DECODE™), higher rotational inertia helps keep the velocity of the flywheel more consistent throughout the wheel's contact with the ball. This means that your flywheel can actually spin slower and launch the ball the same distance!
This Flywheel offers two hole patterns for easy, secure attachment. The first consists of four 4mm holes (with hex counterbores for an easy one-tool installation with hex nuts) on the goBILDA® 32mm square pattern—a great way to create attachments with the huge ecosystem of goBILDA® components!—and the second consists of eight holes on a 48mm square pattern. This pattern matches that of our 96mm Diameter Hogback Traction Wheel! The special 3.3mm holes in the Hogback allow you to attach the Flywheel to its side using 12mm length M4 thread-forming socket head screws.
